Gerry Reilly Cup Semi-final
Kentstown Rovers 0 v 3 Trim Celtic AFC
Celtic produced a remarkable second-half performance to advance to their second cup final of the season after defeating a very strong Kentstown side 3-0. Kentstown had the better of the first half chances and should have been ahead at half time with the Celtic goal leading a charmed life on two occasions. At the other end a great Niall Farrell turn in the penalty area almost gave the away side the lead, but his left foot shot curled agonisingly wide. Celtic came out for the second half with renewed determination not to let this chance slip through their fingers with every player putting their bodies on the line. With an hour gone, Farrell picked up the ball and drifted past two defenders before arrowing a right foot shot into the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance. Celtic survived another scare when the home side thought they had equalised only for the Kentstown player to be judged offside. The away side made the most of this with twenty minutes to go when Keith Jones picked out Liam Reilly in the box, and Reilly’s deftly flicked header just beat the keeper to double Celtic’s advantage. The hoops put the icing on the cake in injury time when substitute Paul Walsh picked up the ball in his own half and ghosted past four Kentstown players before being tripped with the goal at his mercy. Andrew Gibmey stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to record a victory that looked a lot more comfortable than it was. We wish Kentstown the best of luck for the remainder of the season where they look well placed to win their league.
